Course Description
     Basic Conversation is designed to provide individuals with English as a second language who wish to improve their spoken communication skills. The course covers basic interactions involving topics everyone faces at work and in everyday life.  The focus is on oral communication skills, with listening and reading as input for speaking activities.  Content of this course can be used to prepare for attending international program or studying abroad.

     Throughout the course, attendees develop fluency in conversational English by working on skills such as expressing an opinion, agreeing and disagreeing appropriately, storytelling, and keeping a conversation going.  Attendees practice language for real-world tasks such as telephoning, making apologies, and making requests. Special attention is given to language use variations according to level of formality, situation, and participants.

Course Objective
     • Developing English communication skills for use in everyday life
     • Increasing vocabulary, conversational skills and improving pronunciation
     • Building experience and exposure necessary to develop confidence in speaking English in various situations and scenarios

Course Duration
     20 hours (8 weeks – 2.5 hours per week)

Prerequisites
     Individuals with ability to understand some English

Course Outcomes
     At the successful completion of this course, attendees will be able to:
     • understand and communicate using conversational English
     • interact effectively in pairs and small groups to accomplish goals
     • communicate effectively and appropriately with people
     • use problem solving skills for situations which regularly occur in business 222

     The course will be composed of most or all of the following topics, depending on the amount of class time.  Attendees can also suggest areas to focus on should they have a particular requirement or area of interest.  Workshop, role play, discussion, group work, pair work, video and case study will be used as part of the course work.

     • Applying Telephoning Skills

          o Call Center/Help Desk

  Lesson 4: Communication in groups and teams
     • Roles of Individual
     • Characteristics of Successful Team
     • Team Building

  Lesson 5: Request, Reply and Feedback
     • Requesting and Asking for something
     • Response to Requests and Questions
          o Acceptance
          o Decline – How to say NO
     • Feedback
     • Compliments
     • Positive Reinforcement
